About Color Fields Art Space
Color Fields Art Space is an art studio for children. We celebrate curiosity and imagination, nurturing the process of creation rather than focusing on the outcome. We believe that art making is an essential part of the human experience! At Color Fields we offer the space and time for children to direct their own ideas with materials in a safe and nurturing environment. Our goal is to support families as they foster these fundamental qualities. We connect with children through kindness, patience, respect, and humor. We honor their uniqueness and celebrate their individuality.
What is process art and why is it important?
In process art, there is not a decided outcome to any project. Specific materials and tools are provided in a safe environment with demonstrations about how to use them. Project ideas are generated in conversation but the emphasis is on exploration and experimentation. The child is supported with the needed information and skills for their individual project.
Allowing children to use materials independently, follow their intuition, and generate ideas as they explore a material helps them build confidence, motor skills, and perseverance. They learn to trust their intuition, strengthen their determination and grow self worth as they complete their own idea. Watching a child deeply invested in their project, finally looking up to notice the room around them with a face of pride in their thinking is pure joy for Celia as an art educator. Or…using their whole body as they explore paint on a giant canvas, they jump to make a high five mark with a hand full of their favorite color. The experience is the value.
About our classes
We currently offer one hour classes for children ages 3-10. We share a location with the Childrens Cooperative Playschool on Ephesus Church road on the border of Chapel hill and Durham in NC. For Playschool families we offer child care from 1-2 between their child’s school day and the start of the art class. The classes will take place in the front yard and the carport (a covered porch space adjoining the yard). We have access to the preschool as needed and will use the big room in the event that weather does not permit us to use the yard and carport. Each class will have no more than 10 students and 2 teachers. We will have many individual projects and many group projects. Many will be completed in one day and many will be ongoing.
